PIH is a nonprofit hospital serving the needs of over one million people in southeastern Los Angeles County and portions of northern Orange County .

Since opening in 1959, PIH has been the area's leading healthcare center. PIH has won multiple awards of excellence. Most recently, PIH has been presented with HealthGrades' 2007 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. Of the 4,971 acute care hospitals surveyed, only 266 earned this distinction. In addition, PIH received two additional awards in 2007 from VHA Inc, a national health care alliance, the leadership awards for Community Benefits Excellence and Clinical Excellence. Finally, the two clinical excellence awards earned PIH the President's Award of Honor.
